Jim grew up in Washington, Indiana and showed an early interest in biology, which culminated in a Ph.D. in ecology from Indiana University in 1975. His thesis investigated the regulation of a terrestrial macroinvertebrate cave community.
From 1975 through 1979, he was Director of the Division of Nature Preserves, for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Then, from 1980 to 2019 he worked as an environmental consultant.

The most recent is co-written with Dr. Richard L. Powell: Chapter 7, Underground World: Caves, pp. notable book project was a chapter on caves in The Natural Heritage of Indiana.
Jim has written many professional and peer-reviewed journal articles over the years. Most article subjects involve the biology of cave systems and natural lands.
